Pilates exercises were created as a different way to workout the body where stretching was just as important as the amount of weight lifted. Even though weight is not always used, pilates uses stretching positions that require strength to hold the static positions.
In turn, as your are stretching your body to increase flexibility, you are also strengthening the muscles that are used to support your body while holding the position.
Combining these two aspects has attracted both men and women to tone their lower areas on the gluteus maximus, thighs, and abdominals.
These three areas I like to consider the powerhouse of your body. The reason for this is because these areas make the difference in your posture, stability, and overall strength.
Unlike a typical workout, pilates requires a large deal of concentration. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying working out does not require concentration.
Nevertheless, the amount of concentration required for these exercises is a lot more because of the focus needed to keep your balance while holding the position of the pilates exercises.
Pilates is broken down into three different levels:
- Novice/Beginner - Obviously for those lacking in experience, the core workout used will focus on the simple building blocks to strengthen the body in order to prepare you for the more advanced levels.
- Intermediate - This level focuses on more difficult positions to further increase the stretching ability of your body. You will build up your skills while focusing more on your weaknesses to gain greater form and precision.
- Expert - At this level you should have a large variety of moves and have a pretty good routine set up for you. Each exercise from now on will be unique and challenging, pushing your abilities to their limits in order to reach your best fitness potential.

Pilates Vs. Hip Hop Abs
Both types of workout routines are unique ways to break away from the typical workout routine that you will do in a gym on your own time. Both hip hop abs and pilates exercises also work your core and thighs. But what really separates the two is the speed at which each exercise is done.

You can look at any of the pilates DVD routines out there and the first thing you will notice is that the exercises are done slowly.
If you were to look at a hip hop abs DVD you will notice that it is upbeat and makes you want to move.
Both of these routines can give you the same benefit, but it depends on what your goals are going to be.
If you are trying to lose weight and want to burn calories quickly, then you will want to focus more on hip hop abs workouts. The fast pace makes the body break a sweat quickly, and burns calories faster.
Pilates on the other hand is for those that want to focus on slower concentration positions. These types of pilates exercises pushes your muscles from natural body resistance and encourages muscle growth. You will not get massive muscles from the workouts, but as your muscles grow your core will tighten creating a sexy flat stomach.
No matter which one you pick you will be able to reach your goals of slimming down, toning up, and getting closer to that dream body you have always wanted.
