The dumbbell side bend is one of the best ab exercises for the obliques because it targets your love handles. Another reason it is highly used in ab workouts is because you are able to quickly change the amount of resistance on the exercise by switching dumbbells. This allows more specialization to your ab workout based on your goals and abilities.

How To Do The Exercise

1. While standing with feet shoulder width apart, hold the dumbbell in your right hand. Let the left hand hang comfortably by your side or place it behind your head. If you place it behind your head, make sure to not pull on your neck while doing this exercise to avoid injury.

2. Slowly start bending to your right side to lower the arm with the dumbbell until your left side is fully stretched.

3. Contract your abs to carefully bring your body back up to the starting position and then repeat.

4. You should try to do 3 sets of 15 reps. If you are easily able to do 15 reps, increase the weight of the dumbbell.

Tips

1. This exercise needs to be performed slowly! Make sure to count for a minimum of two seconds when lowering and lifting up the dumbbell. Going fast could cause injury.

2. Make sure to have good posture. When you are in the starting position, make sure your back is straight and you aren’t slouching.

Extra Six Pack Abs Tip

The best ab exercises for six pack abs requires high amounts of resistance. Make sure when you first do this ab workout that you start at a light weight to understand how to do the exercise correctly. From there, continue to increase the weight until you are no longer able to achieve 15 reps per set. The high amount of resistance will help get rid of those love handles and better sculpt your six pack abs.

If your goal is to get an awesome flat stomach, then you should try to do 30 reps per set instead of 15 reps. Doing the best ab exercises this way will make your body burn more fat and encourage your body to look more streamline. Continue to do the reps slowly in order to get the most out of the workout. Just because you are doing more reps does NOT mean you should do the exercise movement quicker! Slow and steady will create best results.
